I have already blogged about the announcement of The Runwell Turntable, but I am so excited about this new video created by the Shinola team I had to share it as well. It explains Shinola's approach to audio, VPI's amazing turntable expertise, and the relationship with manufacturing partner MDI. I hope you have a few minutes to watch and enjoy the video.
Every year I try to make a post on Thanksgiving. It's a time to reflect on the work that's been done over the past year and a chance think about what's next. I can get caught up overthinking where I'm at as a designer and if the work I'm doing is resonating. I guess that's what makes "us" us. This Black Friday Shinola released their "The Bolt is Black Collection." It reminded me that it's not always about the final product or your "portfolio." It's about the process and sharing the process with the people that matter the most. As I observed each detail of the Runwell Wall Clock, Turntable, and Power Supply I remembered the stories that came with those details.
Many of you have HEARD me talk on end about both frustrations and joys this project has brought me, and I'm thankful you've LISTENED. I'm thankful for all of you. I hope you enjoy the work. Happy Thanksgiving 2016.
There's some GREAT footwear choices out now and I'm having trouble deciding. I can only choose one!
For our MINUS 8 Diver watch, we have added the option to pre-order rubber straps. Available in black, olive, and sand the straps work for either the black or silver models. Check them out on our Indiegogo Campaign page.
Designed with Anh Nguyen and the team at Astro Studios, the MINUS-8 Diver is a bold take on high-performance dive watches. Learn more about the product in the video below or on my projects page and shop the campaign via Indiegogo.
On October 4th at Google's #madebygoogle hardware event, the Chromecast Ultra was announced. I am proud of Astro Studios, Sean Missal, and myself for creating a visually premium hardware product at only $69.99.
The Chromecast Ultra is an upgrade of the original Chromecast as it now streams up to 4K and Ultra HD & HDR picture quality over your WiFi network.
I'll be back with more details of the program added to the project section soon, but for now enjoy the hero image and introduction video below. It's really exciting to be a part of a product that is expected to sell millions of units, and I can't wait to get myself one in November.
I've received a few direct messages to my instagram account asking how I achieve my rendering style. It really takes only a few steps. The key is to get a basic sketch with great proportions completed as a nice underlay. Then the rest is simple.
I hope you enjoy this tutorial. This sketch style has been very liberating for me as it has allowed me to spend more time thinking about blocking in the big-picture design gesture and less time fussing with each individual element.
A few weeks back I attended a trends talk in Los Angeles at MOCA. The common theme with most of the videos I've selected for this post is the use of modern manufacturing processes juxtaposed with traditional materiality. In other cases, it's about using traditional material in a unique way to create an unexpected result. Each of the designers featured below has an amazing portfolio of work, and I highly recommend digging in further.
I completed this project in October of 2011. At the time I was looking for a winter boot and had developed an appreciation for crafted leather boots from brands like Danner, Red Wing, Quoddy, and A.P.C., but all of those boots were missing a sport twist that felt right for me.
For this project I designed under two camps, "Force" and "Flight." LeBron and work boots were inspiration for the "Force" camp while Russell Westbrook and chukka boots were inspiration for the "Flight" camp. Four each camp I developed four concepts and colored each concept in six different colorways.
After spending some time reviewing some work in my archives, I decided to add it to the project section of my website. Below are four of the eight concepts I had completed as a part of this exploration.
