Introducing Shinola + GE

The work I've done with Astrostudios continues to roll out. I previewed the Runwell Wall Clock and Power Collection as it was a part of their "The Bolt is Black Collection" for Black Friday. But now the full collection is available. The Runwell Wall Clock comes in all black, silver and black, silver and white, and silver and navy while each pieces of the power collection are available in Cream, Bold Orange, and Black.

Introducing Shinola Audio: The Runwell Turntable.

I have already blogged about the announcement of The Runwell Turntable, but I am so excited about this new video created by the Shinola team I had to share it as well. It explains Shinola's approach to audio, VPI's amazing turntable expertise, and the relationship with manufacturing partner MDI. I hope you have a few minutes to watch and enjoy the video.

Shinola "The Bolt is Black" Collection

Every year I try to make a post on Thanksgiving. It's a time to reflect on the work that's been done over the past year and a chance think about what's next. I can get caught up overthinking where I'm at as a designer and if the work I'm doing is resonating. I guess that's what makes "us" us. This Black Friday Shinola released their "The Bolt is Black Collection." It reminded me that it's not always about the final product or your "portfolio." It's about the process and sharing the process with the people that matter the most. As I observed each detail of the Runwell Wall Clock, Turntable, and Power Supply I remembered the stories that came with those details.

Many of you have HEARD me talk on end about both frustrations and joys this project has brought me, and I'm thankful you've LISTENED. I'm thankful for all of you. I hope you enjoy the work. Happy Thanksgiving 2016.

Sup, Anh. Sup, Astro.

Black Friday Footwear Recap

There's some GREAT footwear choices out now and I'm having trouble deciding. I can only choose one!

MINUS 8 Diver now available via Indiegogo.

Designed with Anh Nguyen and the team at Astro Studios, the MINUS-8 Diver is a bold take on high-performance dive watches. Learn more about the product in the video below or on my projects page and shop the campaign via Indiegogo.

Shinola Runwell Turntable.

Congratulations to Shinola for announcing their turntable last Tuesday. I'm proud to have been a part of the program and will be posting more process in the projects section soon. For now, enjoy the images of the final product below.

Google Chromecast Ultra

On October 4th at Google's #madebygoogle hardware event, the Chromecast Ultra was announced. I am proud of Astro Studios, Sean Missal, and myself for creating a visually premium hardware product at only $69.99.

The Chromecast Ultra is an upgrade of the original Chromecast as it now streams up to 4K and Ultra HD & HDR picture quality over your WiFi network.

I'll be back with more details of the program added to the project section soon, but for now enjoy the hero image and introduction video below. It's really exciting to be a part of a product that is expected to sell millions of units, and I can't wait to get myself one in November.

"Light" Photoshop rendering technique

I've received a few direct messages to my instagram account asking how I achieve my rendering style. It really takes only a few steps. The key is to get a basic sketch with great proportions completed as a nice underlay. Then the rest is simple.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial. This sketch style has been very liberating for me as it has allowed me to spend more time thinking about blocking in the big-picture design gesture and less time fussing with each individual element.

I start by scanning in the final sketch. I typically unsaturate this layer to eliminate any blues or yellows the scanner may pick up. I then keep this sketch at the top layer on "Multiply."

Starting below the original sketch layer, I create solid fills of color. In this case, the black upper and white sole. NOTE: I like to use a 10% grey background so then the white sole reads as an intentional decision.

To assign a material, I apply a texture over the whole shoe. I know in the next step I will be assigning leather overlays overtop of this mesh material layer, so I am not worried if the mesh extends into other areas.

Leather overlays provide more definition and cover mesh where not necessary. Again, this layer is a simple solid fill.

I like to apply branding before I begin working on the overall highlights and shadows. This way, those highlights and shadows will cover the branding.

Overall highlights and shadows are applied with simple black and white color fills. I reduce the opacity to 10-15% for shadows and 5-10% for highlights. In this case, a core black shadow is applied around the back and side while a white highlight runs down the vamp.

Secondary highlights and shadows are applied with the same approach.

Detailed shadows are applied where overlays fall onto the main body. This helps pop the overlays and laces. Again, this is a solid black fill layer, but the layer opacity is dropped and potentially set to "Multiply."

Using the same techniques to as I did to the overall shoe, I render the laces as a separate group. A solid fill base, and solid fills for highlights and shadows.

Finally, I add a few ovals that act as a ground shadow.

Sunday night design videos

A few weeks back I attended a trends talk in Los Angeles at MOCA. The common theme with most of the videos I've selected for this post is the use of modern manufacturing processes juxtaposed with traditional materiality. In other cases, it's about using traditional material in a unique way to create an unexpected result. Each of the designers featured below has an amazing portfolio of work, and I highly recommend digging in further.
